Aqueous humor is a transparent watery fluid that fills the front section of the eye between the lens and the cornea. It plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and shape of the eye by contributing to the intraocular pressure, lubricating the surfaces of the cornea and lens, removing waste products from the eye as well as providing essential nutrients such as oxygen and glucose. Central BioHub offers a curated collection of aqueous humor samples isolated from patients suffering from disease such as glaucoma or cataract. About Human Aqueous Humor

Aqueous humor is continuously produced in the ciliary body, a structure in the eye that includes the ciliary muscle that controls the shape of the lens and the ciliary epithelium where the fluid is produced. From there, it flows through the pupil into the space between the cornea and the iris called the anterior chamber. From there, it drains out of the eye through a grid of drainage channels before it eventually enters the bloodstream.
Aqueous humor provides essential nutrients, such as oxygen and glucose to the avascular cornea (which lacks blood vessels) and to the lens of the eye.
It also contributes to maintain the intraocular pressure (IOP) inside the eye. Sufficient IOP is essential to keep the shape of the eye intact and support its normal functioning. Hence, changes in the IOP can lead to eye diseases such as glaucoma.
Aqueous humor also plays an important role in lubricating the surfaces of the cornea and the lens. Due to this process, the friction that occurs when the eyelids blink and the eye moves, is reduced.
Finally, aqueous humor helps in the removal of waste products from the eye such as metabolic waste and cellular debris.
Imbalances in the production or drainage of aqueous humor can lead to eye conditions such as glaucoma, which is characterized by an increase in intraocular pressure which could damage the optic nerve and ultimately result in a loss of vision. Therefore, proper regulation of aqueous humor is crucial for maintaining good eye health and vision.
